Legislators Seek Tariffs on Chinese-Made Cars

Vehicles are being imported through Mexico.

Representatives Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois, and two of their colleagues have requested that President Biden’s administration increase tariffs on vehicles made in China. They also want an investigation into steps that would prevent Chinese companies from exporting to the U.S. through Mexico.

In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, the legislators said the current 25 percent tariff on Chinese vehicles is not enough. They wrote, “It is critical that tariffs on (Chinese) automobiles not only be maintained but also increased to stem the expected surge in (Chinese) imports.”

China has become a rival to Western brands in the electric car and truck business. The CEO of Ford recently said, “We see the Chinese as the main competitor, not GM or Toyota. The Chinese are going to be the powerhouse, I think.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and his administration as they consider the legislators’ request and recommendations.
  • For members of the House and Senate as they evaluate methods to compete with China and counter that nation’s influence.
